What makes an album cover animated?
Some releases include motion artwork rather than only a still cover. That motion belongs to the album: a changing scene, moving light or another treatment chosen for the record. Velour plays the motion artwork full screen when it is available. It does not mean that every release has an animated version. Availability is specific to the album, and you may find a mix of animated and regular covers as you move through your library. The music continues to play in the Spotify or Apple Music desktop app.
Regular covers still have a place
A favourite record does not need new artwork to look good on a display. When motion artwork is unavailable, Velour uses the regular album cover with a slow, subtle movement. The idea is to give the artwork room to breathe while keeping the scene quiet enough for a desk. This fallback is part of the experience, so you do not need to troubleshoot an album simply because its cover is still. Choose a track you know, open the scene and let the colour and composition of the cover do the work.
From the desktop with a hotkey
An immersive scene is a change of mood you can make when you want it. Press a hotkey and the screen becomes the cover with lyrics. The app lives in the menu bar and has no Dock icon, keeping the ordinary desktop out of the way between those moments. You can also let an immersive scene take over after a few minutes idle. While the full screen scene is showing and music is playing, the display stays awake, returning to normal sleep behaviour afterwards.
Build a scene across two screens
A MacBook and an external monitor can each take a different role. Put the artwork on the laptop and give the lyrics the larger display, or choose artwork, lyrics, both or just glow separately for each screen. Ambient rim light draws its colours from the album art and travels around the display, wrapping around the notch. Optional beat sync adds a pulse to that light. Together these features let the cover feel like part of the whole desk, rather than a video playing in an isolated window.
What you need to begin
Velour works on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, following Spotify and Apple Music desktop playback. Download the app, move it to Applications and allow current-track access. System audio permission is only needed for optional beat sync, whose live analysis is never saved or uploaded. Velour does not use your microphone or record your screen. The app costs $14.99 as a one-time purchase, with updates included and a licence for one Mac. Start with an album you love and give its artwork a little more space.
